The department gets referrals from almost the whole of Northern India. We carry out about 500 major thoracotomies and 600 bronchoscopic and endoscopic procedures per year with very gratifying results. The cases usually include surgery for complications of pulmonary tuberculosis and Carcinoma lung in addition to other chest conditions. All types of major chest surgery like lung resections, decortcation, thoracoplasty, video-assisted thoracic surgery and tracheal surgery are being done. The experience includes some of the most challenging lung resections. The department is also engaged in teaching and training undergraduate and postgraduate medical students. We have developed a special module for training in bronchoscopy and trained many practicing physicians in addition to students. We organized for the 5^th National Conference on Bronchology in 1999 and CT-CME cum workshop in November 2007. The department is also engaged in peer review for the articles related to thoracic surgery for publication in some reputed journals. We are collaborating with other departments in various research projects also.

 As most of the cardio-thoracic surgical centers in the country are engaged almost exclusively in cardiac surgery, facilities for general thoracic surgery are scarce. The department is the only center in New Delhi devoted exclusively to the care of general thoracic surgical patients. It has a wide referral base and the results are also comparable to international standards.

M.Ch. (CTS) trainee students from GB Pant Hospital, New Delhi and All India Institute of Medical Sciences are being posted on a regular basis in the department for training and teaching in thoracic surgery.
